| | | | Product Description: Condition: ReconditionedBe impressed with this Philips DVD player with HDMI digital video and audio connection. Step into another home entertainment arena as you immerse yourself with High Definition video (720p / 1080i/1080p). HDMI for simple AV connection: HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. It is a direct digital connection that can carry digital HD video as well as digital multichannel audio. By eliminating the conversion to analog signals it delivers perfect picture and sound quality, completely free from noise. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with (Digital Video Interface) DVI. DivX Ultra Certified: DivX Ultra combines DivX playback with great features like integrated subtitles, multiple audio languages, multiple tracks and menus into one convenient file format. High definition JPEG playback: High definition JPEG playback lets you view your pictures on your television in resolutions as high as two megapixels. Now you can view your digital pictures in absolute clarity, without loss of quality or detail - and share them with friends and family in the comfort of your living room. Progressive Scan: Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure. Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Link: The Universal Serial Bus or USB is a protocol standard that is conveniently used to link PCs, peripherals and consumer electronic equuipment. Hi-Speed USB devices have a data transfer rate of up to 480 Mbps - up from the 12 Mbps in original USB ones. With Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Link, all you have to do is plug in your USB device, select the movie, music or photo and play away. | | | | |
Rating: - Great product for the money By Cristy Brandstedter (Tampa. Florida) I bought this Phillips 5992 DVD player in December 2009. I have used it almost daily to play my video files from hard drives via the USB port. There are very few file formats this machine will not play. If it is an oddball foreign codec, the program is probably available in a format this DVD player can handle. I would suggest using no bigger than a 500 gig hard drive as it takes too long for a larger one to load the directory. If you have that many files it is probably wise to have them on two separate drives in case of a hard drive failure. It would take a long time to rebuild all the files on a 1 gig hard drive.
If you want to play from a hard drive, it will be necessary to reformat the hard drive it to fat 32 format BEFORE loading your video files onto it. The DVD player will not recognise the more modern formats on XP machines. Most hard drives will come pre loaded with the more modern format. You can check the format by connecting the drive to your computer and clicking on the drive, then properties. You can find freeware to format the disk on the internet.
The DVD player has given me no problems despite its heavy usage and there is a definate advantage to having the HDMI picture up conversion to 1080I. You can really see the difference with a good HDTV using an HDMI cable. I have a hard time telling the difference between blue ray and up converted standard DVD.
The region free hack is also a good feature. The instructions given for changing the regional code are a little confusing. It took a long time to figure out what was missing from the instructions given by another reviewer. Here is the hack fully written out.
Turn on the DVD Player. Open the DVD tray (you will not be able to access the preference page if the tray is closed). Press Setup button on the remote control. Press right arrow on ring around large OK button to get to Preference menu. It is the third icon to the right at the top of the screen. Press 1,3,8,9,3,1 Press the up arrow on the grey ring around the large OK button to move the region code from 1 to 0 Press the menu button to exit.
Thanks to M Wilson for the hack. The instructions were a little confusing. I hope the additional information I added helps remove some of the confusion.
I am thoroughly happy with this DVD player and its versitility. I would highly recommend it. Rating: - DVP 5992 By E () I havr tried many DVD players with Multi region options, but the Philips line has definitely been the best-working within my experience. I can only recommend it Rating: - Was it really refurbished? By David A. Krebs (Miami, FL) Purchased the Philips DVP5992 refurbished, seems that the unit I received was not checked out adequately and I am stuck with a bad unit.
I did not even get to use the player a half a dozen times which is why I am writing my review which I have never done before. Called the merchant who I purchased the unit, was told to contact Philips. Emailed Philips, they sent me out a quick start guide email which is the same copy sent to me in the box with the unit. Followed the instructions once again and it seemed to work. Next time around, forget it, same issues and the DVD player was not recognizing the disk. Of course, at that point, I was out of the 90 day warranty period. Called Philips this time around, got a nice guy on the phone telling me to unplug the unit and re-plug it for resetting purposes, trying a CD rather than a DVD and also trying a new power outlet. Nothing worked and experienced the same issues as before.
Requested to speak to a supervisor, dude was not as nice as the previous guy and quiet frankly did not care other than to explain the warranty to me once again as the previous representative did - like I did not hear it the first time around! He asked me for some sort of code from the previous contact, which of course I did not have. Let him know that I did not even get some sort of code this time around - but who writes those numbers down anyways.
Bottom line, someone at Philips did not check off all of their little boxes and I have a player that I will be throwing in the trash - not going to buy another Philips DVD player this time around! Guaranteed!
poor Philips customer service, bad Philips customer service
Rating: - Philips DVP5992 1080P HDMI is Awesome ! By Patrick S. Bellemare (San Francisco, CA USA) The Philips DVP5992 1080P HDMI is truly an awesome DVD player, I have used this almost daily since buying this unit, it has played almost every DVD rip I have thrown at it, picture and sound quality are as good as my other DVD a Blu-Ray player, which cost dubble what I paid for this unit, plus this was a \"refurbished unit\" so far it has worked flawlessly. I even tried hooking up my old Archos jukebox multimedia via the USB port, to play some music.havn\'t as yet hooked it up to an external hard drive. I have my unit hooked up via digital coaxial cable for digital sound and picture is both HDMI & componant RCA cables. I recomend this DVD player, my last philips DVD lasted almost 6 years of daily use before it froze up on me. I hope to get 3-5 years use out of this one, hours of DVD and no comericals .
